Supermodel Christy Turlington – about his attitude to ethical fashion
In an era of smart consumption and the massive emergence of eco-friendly brands, the American company J Brand has set a new goal for sustainable development: to become the first brand to produce 100% environmentally friendly denim by the end of 2020. At the beginning of this year, the California brand entered into a partnership with Christy Turlington, the legendary supermodel of the 1990s and the head of the association Every Mother Counts, whose work is aimed at reducing and preventing deaths associated with childbirth and pregnancy. Christie tried on jeans from the new J Brand spring-summer 2020 collection, which spent 90% less water on production than traditionally manufactured products, and spoke about her capsule wardrobe and attitude towards ethical fashion.
How did you succeed in the fashion world?
I have no clear answer. I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to achieve at least half of what I have. I think this is due to the fact that you need to be yourself and pursue your interests.
What is your first fashion memory?
This is probably my first big shot for Vogue with photographer Arthur Elgort. I was 16. He had the coolest studio in SoHo, shooting thanks to him was easy and fun. He taught me a lot over the years.
What thing in your wardrobe would you never give up?
I can’t say that I have some thing in my wardrobe that I would never refuse. Although maybe my wedding dress? John Galliano designed it specifically for me.

What five things should every woman in the wardrobe have?
Perfect jeans, a nice jacket, a black turtleneck, a loose T-shirt and a white button-down shirt.
What is your main style tip?
Less is better.
What fashion mistakes should be avoided at all costs?
Follow blindly trends.
Describe your style in three words?
Classic, discreet, everyday.
Who are your style icons?
Audrey Hepburn and Angelica Houston.
Naomi Campbell, Jani Versace, Christy Turlington, 1990s Versace Show
What does it mean to have a sense of style?
I think when someone is true to themselves and behaves truly, this is the style.
An ethical approach to fashion is gaining momentum every year. When did you first get involved in this?
I think this happened when I discovered that I have voting rights. It took me several years to become a young model before I realized that I could say no. I stopped wearing fur early enough and never returned it to my world.
What exactly in the J Brand collection impressed you the most?
I am truly impressed with the brand’s commitment to sustainability. As a rule, a ton of water is required to make jeans, but the brand has made great strides in reducing this amount without sacrificing appearance and tactile sensations.
Which item from the new J Brand collection represents you the most?
Telma jeans look the most like me. I love dark denim and a loose silhouette to the bottom. These jeans are classic and modern at the same time.
Who is the J Brand woman in three words?
Inquisitive, involved and faithful.
What would you recommend for a more ethical approach to fashion in terms of style and consumer habits?
I don’t think that most people understand how strong we are. Consumers are kings, and if they say something and come together, they can collectively have a huge impact. There is no reasonable reason why a style should be at risk due to an ethical approach to fashion.
For those who do not have the means to buy luxury, environmentally friendly things, how can they dress and shop without harming the environment?
Every day there is a growing demand for environmentally friendly things at more affordable prices, and more and more companies are solving this problem. Perhaps a few years ago this was a more difficult task, but not now. Sustainability is not synonymous with unattainability.
What are your favorite things in your wardrobe that don't harm the environment?
J Brand jeans and a few H&M eco-friendly items.
What do you recommend doing on a regular basis for a more sustainable life?
We can all contribute. I am a big fan of reprofiling things.
